Leadership Check....
Is it turbulence or is the plane going down?
Today’s topic may be uncomfortable… but it’s super important.
If you are like many other business owners I am talking to every day, you are stressed about the future of your business, your team already knows.
It’s like when you're on a plane and hit turbulence.
You feel it. Everyone does. But what you’re really waiting for?
The captain’s voice.
“Folks, we’re going to drop to a lower altitude and find a smoother ride.”
That one line? Calms the nervous nellies in the cabin and they go about their binge watching knowing it will pass.
But without it?
Your mind starts to spiral: What aren’t they telling us? Is something seriously wrong?
That’s what silence does.
And that’s exactly what your team feels when you say nothing but they can see that sales aren’t rolling in like they used too, or see you stressed and frazzled on meetings pivoting over and over trying to throw spaghetti at the wall to see what sticks.
Silence doesn’t protect them.
It creates a vacuum… and that vacuum fills with:
👂 Rumors
🤯 Anxiety
😤 Distrust
You don’t need a master plan that shows you have it “all figured out”.
You do need to say what you do know.
Start here:
“This year is uncertain. I don’t have all the answers.
But I do know our Q2 focus. And we are watching how things play out every day.
I know what matters most right now (and give them your biggest priorities).
I know I’ll keep you in the loop as things shift.
It’s important that we stay focused and I want this team to feel steady, even when the outside world isn’t.”
Say something.
Say what’s true.
Say what you know.
The right message doesn’t require certainty.
It requires leadership.
In your corner always,
Kristen
